I have 3 designs of circuits. If there is no capacitor over the transformer, the voltage will go to the sky and a 1000v npn may be used ex. bu810 it's a hopeless design! it can run but the bu810 gets hot as in the hell With a capacitor (~ 33nf) a 50 volt transistor can be used. base voltage fluctuates very negative, resulting in an anti paralel diode (1n4148) over Vbe (arrow to the base) With FET (IRFZ44 from banggod), it runs without cooling. Vbat 3V can draw 9mm. spark . the zener can be replaced with a 1n4148 if Vbat<5v see Diagrams and Drain Gate curves
